Purple, Lilac, Lavender and Pink Gems

Amethyst is one of the most loved semi-precious gemstones and with good reason. It occurs in fabulous shades of purple from a pale lilac/pink to deep regal purple. Less well known is green amethyst which is a gorgeous shade of sage green - delicate but not insipid.

Amethyst belongs to the quartz family of gemstones and one of the reasons for its popularity is the clarity of the stones, their brilliance when cut and the ready availability of large pieces. Even the included or cloudier pieces are beautiful and prized as pieces of unique jewellery.

The best sources for amethyst are Brazil and Africa.

The name "Amethyst" derives from the Greek "Amethystos" which can translate as "not drunken". The gemstone symbolises sobriety and is alleged to guard against drunkenness hence the use of carved amethyst wine goblets used in ancient Greece!

Amethyst is the February birthstone and the gemstone for your 6th wedding anniversary.

For more information about this wonderful gemstone see About Gemstones.
