We've also put together a list of books that will help increase your appreciation of the world of gems and jewellery. If one or two take your fancy you can click on the title to be taken staight to Amazon to complete your purchase.

This book is a gem in itself, gorgeous photographs and text from a real expert.

A little more detailed, this title is published by Smithsonian Handbooks. The Smithsonian Institution is one of the world's largest and prestigious museums. It's origin is an interesting story in its own right.

In 1826, James Smithson, a British scientist, drew up his last will and testament, naming his nephew as beneficiary. Smithson stipulated that, should the nephew die without heirs (as he would in 1835), the estate should go to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.

The motives behind Smithson’s bequest remain mysterious. He never traveled to the United States and seems to have had no correspondence with anyone there. Some have suggested that his bequest was motivated in part by revenge against the rigidities of British society, which had denied Smithson, who was illegitimate, the right to use his father’s name.

With some of the world's very finest gems among its collections this book is very well connected!

A talented singer and dancer Antoinette Matlins turned down Bob Hope when he asked her to join his troupe. She went on to be one of the most prolific writers and lecturers on gems and jewellery. This book is a must have for those with a keen interest in jewellery in all its forms.
